ISLAMABAD; Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), recently concluded an official visit to the People’s Republic of China, where he engaged in a series of high-level meetings with senior Chinese political and military leaders.

The visit aimed to reaffirm the enduring strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, especially in light of regional security dynamics and global geopolitical shifts.

According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the COAS met with Vice President of China, Han Zheng, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The discussions focused on regional and global developments, connectivity projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and the need for joint responses to emerging security challenges. Both nations reiterated their mutual commitment to sovereign equality, multilateralism, and regional peace.

The Chinese leadership commended Pakistan’s armed forces as a pillar of stability in South Asia and emphasized the value of Pakistan’s role in ensuring peace and security in the broader region. The talks also underscored the importance of ongoing political coordination and economic integration, particularly through CPEC, a flagship project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

On the military front, Field Marshal Munir held in-depth meetings with senior figures of the Chinese armed forces, including General Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC); General Chen Hui, Political Commissar of the PLA Army; and Lieutenant General Cai Zhai Jun, Chief of Staff of the PLA Army.

Upon his arrival at the PLA Army Headquarters, the COAS was accorded a formal guard of honour, reflecting the deep-rooted friendship between the two militaries.

The meetings featured wide-ranging discussions on defence and security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, joint training initiatives, defence modernization, and enhanced military-to-military institutional frameworks. Both sides stressed the importance of building operational synergy and strategic alignment to effectively tackle hybrid and transnational threats.

The Chinese military leadership reiterated its full confidence in the robustness of bilateral defence ties and acknowledged Pakistan’s crucial role in regional stability. Field Marshal Munir, in turn, expressed deep appreciation for China’s unwavering support and affirmed Pakistan’s intent to further strengthen military cooperation in all areas.

Pakistan and China have long shared a close strategic alliance, often described as an “iron brotherhood.” Their defence cooperation spans decades, and both countries continue to collaborate closely under various military and economic frameworks, including CPEC.

In recent years, increasing global polarization and shifting security challenges in the Indo-Pacific and South Asian regions have added new urgency to their cooperation. The visit by Pakistan’s army chief comes at a time when both nations face complex geopolitical pressures and seek greater coordination to safeguard mutual interests.

Field Marshal Munir’s engagements in Beijing highlight the deepening politico-military ties between the two nations and underline their shared vision for lasting regional peace, security, and development through sustained high-level dialogue and strategic coordination.
