Islamabad: The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is being observed across the globe today, June 26th. This annual observance is a crucial platform to strengthen action and cooperation towards achieving a world free from drug abuse.
The day serves as a global reminder to raise awareness about the profound and pervasive problems that illicit drugs present to society. It highlights the devastating impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities, encompassing severe health consequences, social disruption, and increased criminal activity.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (also known as World Drug Day) encourages a global commitment to prevention, treatment, and combating illicit drug trafficking. This year’s focus, as outlined by the UNODC, is “Break the Cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime”, emphasizing the critical need for long-term action to dismantle the nexus between organized crime and drug trafficking.
Through various events and campaigns, governments, civil society organizations, and communities worldwide use this day to educate the public, promote evidence-based interventions, and foster international cooperation to build a healthier and safer world.
