ISLAMABAD (MNN); US President Donald Trump has announced a two-week suspension of military action against Iran following discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, marking a significant diplomatic development amid escalating Middle East tensions.
In a social media statement, President Trump said he had agreed to “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran” for two weeks, provided that Iran ensures the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz.
Describing the move as a “double-sided ceasefire,” Trump noted that the decision came after Pakistan’s leadership urged restraint and emphasized ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
The US president claimed that military objectives had already been achieved and that negotiations with Iran were at an advanced stage. He revealed that Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Tehran, which he described as a “workable basis” for reaching a long-term peace agreement.
Trump further stated that most contentious issues between the United States and Iran had already been addressed, and the two-week pause would allow both sides to finalise and implement a comprehensive agreement aimed at ensuring lasting peace in the Middle East.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had publicly appealed to Trump to extend the deadline for an Iran deal by two weeks, stressing that diplomatic efforts were progressing positively and required time to succeed. He had also urged Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and called for a temporary ceasefire to stabilise the region.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has warned of severe retaliation if the United States crosses its “red lines,” including potential long-term disruption of global oil and gas supplies.
The announcement comes amid heightened global concerns over energy security and regional stability following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing hostilities involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
Observers see the development as a potential breakthrough, with Pakistan playing a key diplomatic role in de-escalating tensions and facilitating dialogue between the parties.
