ISLAMABAD (MNN); Kuwait has assured Pakistan of full cooperation in the supply of diesel and jet fuel, which had been disrupted due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
The development comes after Tehran permitted 20 Pakistan-flagged cargo vessels to pass through the Strait, a move announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Pakistan relies heavily on Kuwait for fuel, importing over 60 percent of its diesel under a long-standing agreement between Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and Pakistan State Oil. However, alternative shipping routes adopted after the disruption have significantly increased freight costs.
On Monday, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik met Kuwait’s Ambassador to Pakistan Nassar Abdulrahman Jasser Almutairi to discuss bilateral ties, energy cooperation, and the evolving regional situation.
According to an official statement, the minister thanked KPC for ensuring full facilitation for Pakistani vessels in lifting diesel and jet fuel. He appreciated Kuwait’s continued support for Pakistan despite global and regional challenges and acknowledged its contribution to the country’s energy security.
Malik also conveyed his regards to Kuwait’s Oil Minister Tariq Suleiman Ahmed Al-Roumi and KPC Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Nawaf Al Sabah.
During the meeting, the minister highlighted the longstanding and brotherly relations between Pakistan and Kuwait, noting that the two countries share deep-rooted ties. He pointed out that Pakistan has been importing petroleum products, particularly diesel, from Kuwait for over five decades, reflecting enduring trust and partnership.
He emphasised that Pakistan seeks peace and stability in the region, adding that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is actively working to support peaceful conflict resolution and is personally overseeing efforts to ensure the supply of food and essential commodities to countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The Kuwaiti envoy appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting peace and commended the efforts of its government, people, and armed forces. He noted that Pakistan has demonstrated leadership in advocating peaceful solutions during challenging times.
“Kuwait is proud of Pakistan’s efforts and prays for their success,” the ambassador said, reaffirming his country’s commitment to supporting Pakistan.
Both sides agreed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, and to remain closely engaged to expand collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
