KARACHI (MNN); The Sindh government has suspended Professor Azhar Shah, in-charge of the University of Sindh’s Dadu campus, after videos allegedly showing him in inappropriate circumstances surfaced online, leading to public concern and formal complaints.
In a letter to the university’s vice-chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and Sindh Minister for Universities and Boards Ismail Rahoo stated that the circulating videos had reportedly harmed the institution’s reputation. He ordered the professor’s immediate suspension and directed that a formal inquiry be launched to establish the facts.
The letter noted that the investigation would be conducted in accordance with the law and that the professor would be given a full opportunity to present his defense. The minister instructed that the inquiry be completed within 15 days and that a comprehensive report, including findings and recommendations, be submitted to his office.
He also directed that the matter be placed before the university’s syndicate for further action under the relevant rules.
Separate complaints filed by faculty members and student representatives claim that the viral content consists of multiple video clips recorded at different times. The footage allegedly shows the campus official appearing unsteady and struggling to stand during campus events.
Written submissions to the inquiry committee further allege that the professor frequently appeared intoxicated while on duty, spoke incoherently during lectures and engaged in inappropriate behavior. Some complaints also include allegations of student harassment, according to sources familiar with the proceedings.
The situation escalated after teachers and students reportedly boycotted classes in protest, prompting intervention by the provincial minister.
University authorities confirmed that Professor Shah has been relieved of his administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation. A three-member inquiry committee, headed by Dr Javed, Dean of Business and Commerce at the University of Sindh, has been formed to conduct the probe.
