ISLAMABAD; Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar, has emphasized that the media serves as the fourth pillar of the state and plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion.
Addressing a ceremony held for the oath-taking of newly elected office-bearers of the Islamabad High Court Journalists Association, the Chief Justice stated that once a court delivers a verdict, it becomes public property and is open to criticism without restriction. However, he cautioned that while analysis of judicial decisions is welcome, they should not be distorted or misrepresented.
He said that constructive criticism of judicial shortcomings is appreciated, but court proceedings must be reported impartially without favoring any party. Highlighting the sensitivity of court reporting, he urged journalists to uphold responsible journalism and discourage yellow journalism.
The Chief Justice noted that the words used by court reporters carry significant weight, as they influence public perception. “You bear a heavy responsibility, as people form their opinions based on your reporting,” he remarked.
He further encouraged journalists to highlight decisions made in the public interest and to report on the positive aspects of judicial efforts aimed at public welfare. He added that the judiciary remains a key institution where people place their last hope for justice.
During the ceremony, Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar administered the oath to the newly elected cabinet of the association. Justice Inam Amin Minhas was also present on the occasion.
Both judges congratulated the newly elected President Asad Malik, Secretary Asif Naveed, and other office-bearers of the association.
