GARHI KHUDA BAKHSH / QUETTA (MNN); Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Saturday urged national political unity to tackle the economic challenges arising from the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, as the country marked the 47th death anniversary of PPP founder and former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
Addressing a gathering at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, Bilawal stressed the need for consensus among political forces, saying differences must be set aside to confront the crisis collectively. He emphasised that unity among the federation, provinces, and political parties would make the country resilient against any challenge.
He also appreciated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi for his constructive participation in consultations with the country’s leadership, acknowledging his “positive role” in ongoing discussions.
Bilawal strongly criticised the US-Israeli war on Iran, stating that although the conflict involved major global players, its economic consequences were being felt by ordinary Pakistanis through rising fuel and electricity prices. He expressed hope that diplomatic efforts, including those by Pakistan, would succeed in bringing about a ceasefire and restoring peace.
Paying tribute to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Bilawal highlighted his role in laying the foundation of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, asserting that it strengthened the country’s defence against external threats.
He also pointed to the importance of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) as a vital tool for providing financial relief to the poor during economic hardship. He suggested that any potential mini-budget should prioritise support through the programme, adding that the PPP was ready to cooperate with the federal government to enhance its scope.
Meanwhile, across the country, the 47th death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was observed with solemnity and respect. Quran recitations, prayer gatherings, and commemorative events were held in multiple cities, where PPP leaders and workers paid tribute to the late leader’s services to democracy, public rights, and national sovereignty.
In Balochistan, the Pakistan Peoples Party organised a dignified ceremony attended by party leaders, workers, and members of the women wing, Ghazala Gola, Deputy Speaker of the Balochistan Assembly and PPP Women Wing provincial president, participated as a chief guest and lauded Bhutto’s political legacy.
PPP Women Wing leader Saba Khan Kakar also attended the event and reaffirmed commitment to Bhutto’s mission. Speakers reiterated that Bhutto’s struggle for democracy and people’s rights would continue to guide the party’s future direction.
The ceremonies concluded with special prayers for the departed leader, alongside renewed pledges to uphold his vision of democratic governance and public service.
