ISLAMABAD (MNN); Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, along with senior leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party, met Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F), at his residence in Islamabad on Wednesday to discuss key political developments.
Bilawal was accompanied by party leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Nayyar Bukhari and Chaudhry Yasin, while Asad Mehmood represented JUI-F during the meeting.
According to sources, the discussions primarily focused on the upcoming elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Both sides agreed to continue consultations and coordination regarding electoral strategies and political engagement in these regions.
The meeting comes shortly after the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission indicated that the schedule for Legislative Assembly elections is likely to be announced in May. Meanwhile, elections in Gilgit-Baltistan are expected later this year after being postponed due to severe weather conditions.
Sources further revealed that PPP leaders raised concerns over what they termed “hasty legislation” by the government. Both parties discussed the need for greater cooperation on parliamentary matters and agreed to maintain coordination on key legislative issues.
The talks also touched upon a possible 28th constitutional amendment, with PPP expressing reservations over certain proposed provisions. It was reported that Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari endorsed some of Fazlur Rehman’s views regarding the legislative process.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman emphasised that rushed lawmaking could undermine parliamentary credibility and stressed that any move to curtail provincial autonomy under the 18th Amendment should not proceed without comprehensive debate and consensus.
