RAWALPINDI (MNN); The Pakistan Navy has launched a new maritime security initiative titled “Operation Muhafizul Bahr” to safeguard national shipping and maritime trade amid rising regional tensions.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation has been initiated in response to the evolving maritime security environment in the region and potential threats to critical sea lanes.
The military’s media wing stated that the move aims to ensure the uninterrupted flow of Pakistan’s energy supplies and protect vital sea lines of communication that are essential for the country’s economic stability.
Under the operation, Pakistan Navy vessels have begun escorting merchant ships carrying important cargo to ensure their safe passage through regional waters.
The statement added that the escort operations are being conducted in close coordination with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to guarantee the safety of commercial shipping.
Officials said the navy is closely monitoring the maritime situation and maintaining strict control over the movement of merchant vessels operating in and around Pakistan’s sea routes.
“Pakistan Navy is fully aware of the prevailing maritime situation and is actively monitoring and controlling the movement of merchant vessels to ensure their safe and secure transit,” the statement said.
The ISPR highlighted that nearly 90 percent of Pakistan’s international trade is conducted through maritime routes, making the protection of sea lanes a critical national priority.
Ensuring the security of these shipping routes is particularly important at a time when regional tensions and conflict have raised concerns about possible disruptions to maritime commerce and energy shipments.
According to the statement, Pakistan Navy ships are currently escorting two merchant vessels as part of the newly launched operation.
The navy has reiterated that it remains fully prepared to respond to any emerging maritime security challenges and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of national shipping.
The statement concluded that the Pakistan Navy remains committed to maintaining secure sea routes, protecting Pakistan’s maritime interests and contributing to overall regional maritime stability.
