Sports Desk (MNN); India captain Suryakumar Yadav has urged his team to embrace pressure ahead of the highly anticipated T20 World Cup final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
With more than 100,000 fans expected to fill the world’s largest cricket stadium and hundreds of millions watching across the country, India will carry the weight of expectations from a cricket-loving nation of around 1.4 billion people.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Suryakumar said playing the final of a World Cup at home was a special moment and his team was excited about the challenge.
“There are nerves and butterflies in the stomach, but as I always say — if there’s no pressure, there’s no fun,” he said.
The Indian captain added that the entire squad and support staff were looking forward to the match and believed the pressure should be embraced rather than feared.
India are aiming to become the first team to retain the T20 World Cup title and also the first host nation to win the tournament on home soil.
The match will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where Australia defeated India in the final of the ODI World Cup in 2023, a memory many fans still recall.
Despite the high expectations, Suryakumar said the team was trying to remain relaxed and avoid unnecessary tension in the dressing room.
He credited teammates such as Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah for maintaining a positive atmosphere in the squad.
“It is very important to have such characters around. When situations get tight, you need someone who can lighten the mood in the dressing room or even on the team bus,” he said.
Suryakumar also stressed the importance of team culture and giving players freedom to express themselves.
“A happy team atmosphere is very important. Players should have the freedom to share their ideas and play their natural game,” he added.
Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said his team would not hesitate to upset the hosts and silence the home crowd in the final.
“I wouldn’t mind winning a trophy,” Santner said ahead of the match.
New Zealand reached the T20 World Cup final in 2021 but lost to Australia, and the team has never won a white-ball World Cup title.
Santner acknowledged that India would be under immense pressure playing in front of a huge home crowd.
“That comes with a lot of added pressure as well,” he said. “If we can put that pressure back on them, we’ll see what happens.”
New Zealand’s journey to the final has been mixed. They produced a dominant performance in the semi-final by defeating South Africa by nine wickets, with Finn Allen scoring the fastest century of the tournament.
However, the team also suffered defeats earlier in the competition against South Africa and England.
India, on the other hand, have entered the final with strong momentum after winning three consecutive matches.
Santner said his team would draw confidence from their semi-final performance and hoped to repeat the kind of upset Australia achieved against India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad.
“T20 cricket can be unpredictable,” he said. “If we play our game well, we can upset another big team.”
