GILGIT (MNN); The Gilgit-Baltistan government has enforced a three-day curfew in Gilgit and Skardu and formally requested the deployment of Pakistan Army troops to assist civil authorities as the law and order situation deteriorated after large-scale protests.
According to an official notification issued by the Home and Prisons Department, the decision was taken due to what authorities described as a precarious security environment in the region. The unrest followed demonstrations triggered by reports of the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in alleged United States-Israeli air strikes.
The notification, addressed to the Force Commander of Force Command Northern Areas, expressed concern that the situation could further escalate, particularly in District Gilgit and District Skardu. Authorities feared that continued protests might lead to violence, posing risks to public safety and property.
In response, the provincial administration sought the deployment of Pakistan Army troops in aid of civil power to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents. The curfew has been imposed for an initial period of three days — March 2, 3 and 4 — in both districts.
Officials stated that the measure aims to safeguard human life and protect public and private property from potential damage. A detailed schedule outlining curfew timings and possible relaxation periods has also been issued to facilitate residents’ essential needs.
Security arrangements have been significantly strengthened in sensitive areas, with additional checkpoints established and law enforcement agencies placed on high alert. Authorities have urged citizens to remain indoors during curfew hours and to fully cooperate with security personnel to ensure stability in the region.
The government reiterated that the measures are temporary and necessary to restore calm and prevent further deterioration of the situation.
