LAHORE (MNN); Prominent poet, naat reciter and public speaker Syed Salman Gilani passed away on Saturday after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed.
The 74-year-old had been undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Zayed Hospital for heart and liver complications. According to his relatives, he had been unwell for a considerable period, and his health deteriorated in recent days despite medical efforts.
Gilani was widely respected in literary and religious circles for his heartfelt naat recitations and poetry. Admirers often described his delivery style as simple, sincere and deeply relatable. Over the years, both his devotional and non-devotional poetry gained popularity and was frequently recited at religious gatherings. He was also known for composing humorous verses that resonated with audiences.
Funeral prayers will be offered after Zuhr at Jamia Ashrafia in Lahore. Family members said that relatives, friends, students and members of the literary community are expected to attend.
Expressing grief over his passing, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, described Gilani as a respected poet whose devotional poetry touched many lives. He said the late poet shared close ties with his family and offered prayers for his forgiveness.
