ISLAMABAD (MNN); The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) has announced that a three-credit-hour course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) will become compulsory for all undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes nationwide from the 2026 academic session.
In an official notification issued on Thursday, the commission directed all public and private universities to incorporate the mandatory AI course into their curricula without delay.
According to the HEC, every undergraduate and postgraduate programme will now include a dedicated three-credit-hour AI course. Institutions may offer the course as an elective, an interdisciplinary module, or a supporting subject within the programme structure.
The commission emphasised that integrating AI education into academic curricula is no longer optional but essential in today’s rapidly evolving world.
“In the fast-changing landscape of the 21st century, Artificial Intelligence has emerged as a transformative force,” the HEC stated.
The initiative aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and practical skills to effectively utilise AI tools within their respective disciplines, thereby enhancing their academic performance and professional competitiveness.
