LAHORE (MNN); Punjab government officials have remained tight-lipped over reports claiming that the provincial administration has acquired a luxury Gulfstream aircraft for VIP transport purposes. The alleged development has sparked growing criticism from political figures and social media users.
The claims surfaced on Monday through an X account, “The Stratcom Bureau,” which primarily shares defense and security-related news. The account alleged that the Government of Punjab had acquired a 2019-manufactured Gulfstream GVII-G500 aircraft for VIP transport use.
In a subsequent post, the same account claimed that the aircraft carries the registration number N144S and that its existing US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) registration would soon be changed to a Pakistani registration. The reported asking price for the jet was said to range between $38 million and $42 million.
Ownership and Registry Details
According to the FAA registry, the aircraft is currently listed as being owned by TVPX Aircraft Solutions Inc. Trustee. As per the company’s website, it frequently serves as a registered owner for aircraft trusts, facilitating the buying, selling, and leasing of planes—particularly for non-US citizens or for those seeking privacy.
Flight tracking service Flight Radar indicates that the aircraft has been operating between various airports in Punjab since at least February 12, further fueling speculation regarding its alleged acquisition by the provincial government.
Officials Avoid Confirmation
Attempts were made to seek clarification from multiple senior officials regarding the reported purchase, but no official confirmation has been provided.
Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman and Additional Chief Secretary Ahmad Raza Sarwar did not respond to phone calls or text messages seeking comment. Additional Secretary (Welfare) Waseem Hamid denied the claim when contacted but abruptly disconnected the call shortly afterward.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari was also contacted for comment; however, she did not respond to calls or text queries regarding the matter.
The continued silence from government representatives has contributed to speculation and public debate surrounding the alleged purchase.
Political Backlash
Amid the lack of official clarification, political figures have voiced strong criticism of the reported acquisition.
Former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail shared the Stratcom Bureau’s post on X and contrasted the alleged purchase with the government’s recent increase in petroleum prices. He remarked that while citizens are being asked to tighten their belts and make sacrifices, Punjab’s privileged elites appear to be preparing to travel in luxury private jets.
Similarly, former Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair criticized the reported purchase, describing the aircraft as a luxury asset worth more than Rs1,000 crore allegedly acquired for the use of the chief minister and party elites.
Zubair questioned whether a country grappling with serious economic challenges—where approximately 45 percent of the population lives below the poverty line and unemployment remains at record levels—can afford such an expensive acquisition. He also stated that the Punjab government should issue a formal denial if the reports are inaccurate.
Economic Context and Public Concerns
Pakistan continues to face economic pressures, including inflation, rising fuel prices, and fiscal constraints. In such an environment, reports of high-value government expenditures are likely to draw public scrutiny.
Analysts argue that transparency is essential in matters involving significant public spending. Without clear communication from authorities, speculation can intensify and erode public trust.
At present, no official confirmation or detailed explanation has been issued regarding the alleged purchase of the Gulfstream aircraft. Whether the claims are substantiated or not, the controversy highlights the importance of timely clarification in matters involving public funds and government assets.
For now, attention remains focused on whether the Punjab government will formally address the allegations and clarify the purpose, funding source, and status of the aircraft in question.
