BAJAUR (MNN); An additional station house officer was martyred after terrorists launched a late-night assault on a police station in the War Mamund tehsil of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district, officials confirmed on Sunday.
According to police, militants armed with light and heavy weapons stormed the station on Saturday night. Personnel on duty responded swiftly and managed to repel the attack after an intense exchange of fire.
A senior officer stated that Additional SHO Gul Mahmood Din embraced martyrdom while bravely confronting the attackers. He added that all other police officials at the station remained safe.
Security officials noted that attacks on police and law enforcement agencies have surged across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan since the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.
Earlier this week, four policemen — including an SHO — were martyred in a separate ambush in the Wanda Budh area of Paniala in Dera Ismail Khan. The police party had been returning from a search operation when militants opened fire from nearby forest cover. Officials reported that several militants were also killed during the retaliatory exchange.
Child Killed, Eight Injured in Mortar Explosion
In a separate incident in Bajaur’s Salarzai tehsil, an unexploded mortar shell detonated on Sunday afternoon in the Kardok area, killing one child and injuring eight others, including a woman.
Rescue sources said the injured were shifted to Khar Hospital, while four critically wounded victims were referred to a hospital in Peshawar for advanced treatment. According to preliminary reports, children had found the unexploded shell and brought it home, where it later exploded.
Authorities believe the blast appears accidental but have launched a formal investigation. The area was cordoned off as security personnel collected evidence.
Last September, a similar mortar explosion in a field in Bajaur claimed the lives of four teenagers and injured two others, highlighting ongoing risks from unexploded ordnance in the region.
