Web Desk (MNN); Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev has said that Moscow is currently prioritizing engagement with Pakistan in the areas of regional security and the fight against international terrorism, while also strengthening coordination on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
In an interview with the TASS News Agency, Ambassador Khorev noted that cooperation between cities and regions of the two countries holds significant potential. He said Russian regions including Moscow, the Republic of Tatarstan and Primorsky Krai, along with Pakistan’s provinces of Punjab and Sindh, have already shown interest in expanding such links.
The ambassador said Russia is placing special emphasis on enhancing cooperation in education, science and culture. Efforts are underway to promote the Russian language in Pakistan through initiatives such as the federal project “Russian Teachers Abroad,” alongside joint scientific conferences and cultural and sports events.
Looking ahead, Khorev stressed the importance of boosting bilateral trade, establishing reliable alternative payment mechanisms and launching major joint projects. These include the revival of Pakistan Steel Mills, the development of rail connectivity between Russia and Pakistan, cooperation in hydropower and the creation of joint ventures for pharmaceutical production, including insulin.
He said Pakistan has expressed interest in cooperation in oil exploration and production, adding that Russia is ready to support Pakistan in strengthening its energy sovereignty. Khorev recalled that the former Soviet Union played a key role in establishing Pakistan’s state-owned Oil and Gas Development Company Limited in the 1960s and helped discover several oil and gas fields.
The ambassador also highlighted constructive collaboration within the SCO, noting that ensuring regional security and countering terrorism and transnational organized crime remain top priorities.
Russia, he said, welcomes Pakistan’s interest in joining BRICS. He added that Islamabad’s accession to the New Development Bank could serve as a practical step toward deeper integration with the bloc.
Referring to Diplomats’ Day, observed on February 10, Khorev extended greetings to Russian diplomats at home and abroad, wishing them good health, inspiration and success in advancing Russia’s interests globally.
