ISLAMABAD (MNN); Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Tuesday clarified that former prime minister Imran Khan did not undergo any surgical procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and was only given injections as part of his treatment.
Responding to questions about Imran Khan’s health during a Senate session, the minister said the PTI founder himself had opted to receive medical care at PIMS. He added that if any similar medical issue arises in the future, Imran Khan would be provided with all required medical facilities.
Tarar said that if Imran Khan feels his rights have been violated or has any grievances, he has the option to approach the relevant courts and appellate forums for legal remedy.
Addressing reports about an eye infection, the law minister said that problems related to blood circulation in the eyes are common after the age of 60. He said Imran Khan was administered the same injections that are routinely given to other patients, reiterating that no operation was carried out.
Rejecting allegations of mistreatment, Tarar said no individual was being treated unlawfully. He said Imran Khan is incarcerated following his conviction and is entitled to all facilities as provided under the law.
The law minister further stated that the prime minister never issued any instructions to deny medical facilities to the PTI founder. Instead, the prime minister directed the PIMS administration to issue a factual press release to apprise the public of the actual situation.
Tarar said Imran Khan’s condition is stable and expressed hope for his complete recovery. Referring to the case of PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah, Tarar recalled that Sanaullah was arrested in a false narcotics case during the PTI government and was kept in extremely hot conditions despite suffering an eye stroke days earlier.
Meanwhile, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja visited the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday to file another contempt of court petition against Adiala Jail authorities for repeatedly denying meetings with PTI founder Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned at the Rawalpindi jail since September 2023.
Speaking to reporters at the court premises, Raja said this would be the sixth contempt petition on the issue. He said the IHC had allowed Imran Khan to meet his family, lawyers and associates twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but despite the order, no meetings had been allowed for weeks, including with his sisters and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
Raja said the continued denial of meetings amounted to deliberate and persistent violation of court orders. He maintained that imprisonment restricts physical freedom but does not eliminate fundamental rights, including the right to think and speak.
He alleged that restrictions on meetings were political rather than administrative, aimed at silencing Imran Khan and shaping the political narrative. Raja further claimed that such actions were intended to create fear and helplessness among the public and undermine democratic and constitutional principles.
