ISLAMABAD (MNN); Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai on Tuesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, seeking his personal intervention to ensure a comprehensive medical examination of PTI founder Imran Khan by doctors trusted by the jailed leader.
The letter, shared by Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP) on social media platform X, expressed serious concern over the health of the former prime minister, who is currently imprisoned at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
In the letter, Achakzai said he was writing with utmost urgency to draw the prime minister’s immediate attention to what he described as a serious matter regarding Imran Khan’s health. He noted that recent medical check-ups were carried out without the knowledge or presence of Imran Khan’s personal medical team or family members.
Achakzai said Imran Khan’s personal doctors, who are fully familiar with his medical history, were not informed about the examinations. He stressed that a full medical assessment and necessary tests by trusted doctors were critically required without delay, in accordance with medical ethics, legal responsibilities and fundamental human rights.
The opposition leader named Imran Khan’s personal physicians in the letter, saying it would be appropriate for them to conduct the examination. The doctors listed were Dr Muhammad Aasim Yusuf, Professor Dr Mazhar Ishaq and Professor Dr Aamir Awan.
He urged the prime minister to personally intervene to ensure access to these doctors so that the former prime minister’s health and well-being could be properly safeguarded.
Meanwhile, following reports in the media regarding Imran Khan’s treatment, the government last week confirmed that the former premier had been taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) for medical care.
Speaking to Geo News, Minister Attaullah Tarar said Imran Khan was taken from Adiala Jail to Pims on the night of January 24 for a medical procedure that lasted around 20 minutes. He said Imran Khan’s eyes were examined and, after his written consent, the procedure was carried out. He added that the former prime minister was later shifted back to jail with specific medical instructions.
Pims Executive Director Professor Dr Rana Imran Sikander later said the eye procedure was completed smoothly and that Imran Khan remained stable throughout the treatment. He said the patient was discharged with routine post-procedure care instructions and follow-up advice.
It may be recalled that PTI had strongly criticised what it termed the secret transfer of Imran Khan to Pims, alleging that his family and party leadership were kept uninformed and that he was denied access to his personal doctors.
