Web Desk (MNN); India’s opposition Congress party on Friday demanded an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a senior party leader claimed that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein had referred to the Indian prime minister in material linked to the so-called Epstein files.
Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that an email attributed to Epstein mentioned that Prime Minister Modi had sought his “advice” ahead of a visit to Israel in 2017. The email further claimed that Modi had “danced and sang… for the benefit of the US president,” concluding with the phrase “IT WORKED!”
Khera termed the allegation a matter of “national shame,” saying it raised serious concerns regarding judgment, transparency and diplomatic conduct at the highest level.
In a post on social media platform X, Khera said the reference pointed to an “unexplained association” between the prime minister and Epstein, arguing that the matter had implications for India’s national dignity and global image.
He called on Prime Minister Modi to clarify what advice was allegedly sought, what was meant by actions taken “for the benefit of the US president,” and what the concluding phrase “IT WORKED!” signified.
Khera claimed that the alleged email was part of documents hosted on the US Department of Justice website and was written a few days after Modi’s Israel visit from July 4 to 6, 2017. He also alleged that the prime minister had met then US president Donald Trump shortly before the Israel trip.
Jeffrey Epstein, a former financier with links to several high-profile individuals, died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
His name has appeared in multiple court documents and records released in recent years. However, the inclusion of a person’s name in such documents does not, by itself, establish wrongdoing.
The Congress party said it would continue to seek clarification from the government and urged authorities to confirm the authenticity and context of the cited material.
