ISLAMABAD (MNN); Federal Minister for the Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari has taken notice of complaints regarding the non-credit of electricity units supplied to the national grid by net metering consumers, leading to the resolution of the issue through revised directives.
According to officials, the Power Planning and Monitoring Company (PPMC) immediately reviewed the instructions earlier issued to all Distribution Companies (DISCOs) following the federal minister’s orders. The review resulted in updated guidelines clarifying the method for crediting electricity units generated by net metering users.
The issue arose after it was found that some net metering consumers had installed solar systems exceeding the approved capacity mentioned in their licence, commonly referred to as Distributed Generation (DG) capacity. Last month, several such consumers were not provided any credit at all for electricity supplied back to the grid, which triggered complaints.
The Power Division clarified that the earlier approach of denying credit for all exported units was incorrect. Under the revised directives, only the electricity units generated beyond the approved DG capacity will not be credited. Units supplied to the national grid within the approved capacity will continue to receive full credit.
Following the clarification, all DISCOs have been instructed to immediately implement the revised policy. Authorities said the matter of crediting net metering units has now been formally resolved.
Officials further confirmed that consumers whose electricity bills did not reflect credit for net metering units in previous billing cycles will receive the relevant adjustments in their next bills.
Federal Minister Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari reiterated that the government remains committed to protecting the legitimate rights of electricity consumers. He stressed that no compromise would be made on ensuring transparency and fairness in the net metering system, while also maintaining compliance with approved technical limits.
