ISLAMABAD (MNN); Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday emphasized the need for optimal utilization of Pakistan’s gemstone resources to enhance foreign exchange earnings through increased exports.
Chairing a meeting in Islamabad on the promotion of the gemstones and minerals sector, the prime minister directed all provinces, along with the governments of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, to adopt a coordinated approach for the development of the industry.
He instructed the relevant authorities to hire international experts for the establishment of gemstone centres in Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK.
The prime minister set August next year as the deadline for completing the Islamabad Gemstone Centre and stressed the formulation and implementation of a comprehensive policy framework with expert input.
He underscored the importance of using modern technology and advanced equipment at the centres and called for boosting gemstone exports through value addition.
During the meeting, officials briefed the prime minister on the steps being taken to promote the gemstone industry.
Authorities informed the meeting that a site on Constitution Avenue in Islamabad has been selected for the gemstone centre, which will provide international-standard value addition services, certification facilities, incubation support and a trade hub.
Officials also said work has begun on developing a scientific geo-fencing roadmap for the gemstone sector.
