LAHORE (MNN); An election tribunal on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by jailed PTI leader Dr Yasmin Rashid, challenging PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif’s victory from Lahore’s NA-130 constituency in the 2024 general elections.
The tribunal, headed by retired Justice Rana Zahid Mahmood, rejected the petition on technical grounds, stating that the petitioner failed to fulfill the legal requirements laid down in the Election Act, 2017 for filing an election challenge.
The tribunal noted that Rashid did not properly comply with mandatory provisions of the law. A detailed written verdict is yet to be issued.
Dr Yasmin Rashid had filed the petition on April 16, 2024, contesting the Election Commission of Pakistan’s notification of Nawaz Sharif’s victory. She alleged that the ECP issued the notification unlawfully and manipulated the election results, seeking the annulment of Sharif’s win and her declaration as the returned candidate.
The ECP had notified Nawaz Sharif’s success from NA-130 on February 13, 2024. According to official results, Nawaz Sharif secured 179,310 votes, while Yasmin Rashid obtained 104,485 votes and stood second.
