BEIJING (MNN): China has strongly opposed any move to divide Somalia’s territory, reiterating its firm support for the country’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Monday that no country should promote or back separatist forces within another state for its own interests. Speaking at a regular press briefing, he called on authorities in Somaliland to halt what he described as separatist activities and cooperation with external powers.
His remarks came after Israel became the first country to officially recognise the self-declared Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state on Friday. Israel also expressed its intention to immediately expand cooperation with Somaliland in areas including agriculture, healthcare, technology and economic development.
