GILGIT (MNN); The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday announced the postponement of the general elections scheduled for January 24 because of severe weather conditions, citing concerns over the safety of voters, election staff and security personnel.
The decision was made during an All Parties Conference convened by the Election Commission in Gilgit, where representatives of all political parties unanimously agreed that conducting elections amid the prevailing harsh weather would not be practical.
After the conference, the Election Commission officially withdrew the existing election schedule and stated that a new polling date would be announced at a later stage.
Election officials said the move was taken to safeguard voters, polling staff and security forces, and to ensure a transparent, smooth and orderly electoral process.
The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan added that a revised election timetable would be issued after a detailed review of weather conditions and logistical arrangements.
