ISLAMABAD (MNN); The Embassy of Sweden in Islamabad celebrated the traditional Lucia Festival on Tuesday evening, introducing one of Sweden’s most beloved cultural events to Pakistan. The gathering marked the start of the festive season with candles, music and a message of hope, unity and light.

With a history spanning more than four centuries, the Lucia tradition is deeply rooted in Swedish culture. Observed each December, the custom symbolises the arrival of light during the darkest period of the year. Candlelit processions featuring singers dressed in white honour Saint Lucia’s Day, reflecting warmth, peace and the triumph of light over darkness.
The highlight of the ceremony was the Lucia procession, where members of the Swedish and Nordic community walked in with candles while performing classic Swedish songs, filling the venue with a serene and joyful ambiance.
Addressing the audience, Sweden’s Ambassador to Pakistan, H.E. Alexandra Berg von Linde, said that Lucia represents far more than a cultural ritual. She noted that the festival serves as a reminder of the light people can bring to one another, especially in difficult times. She added that sharing this tradition with friends in Pakistan strengthens bonds of friendship, openness and compassion between the two countries.
This year’s event also showcased an exhibition titled “Sweden in General – Sverige A–Ö,” which offered guests an engaging look into Swedish daily life through the alphabet. Featuring striking visuals and narratives, the exhibition highlighted themes ranging from innovation and equality to nature, education and design, offering insight into Sweden’s values and culture.
The evening concluded with traditional Swedish seasonal delights, including saffron buns, gingerbread cookies, meatballs and other favourites, giving attendees an authentic taste of Sweden.
Through the Lucia celebration in Islamabad, the Swedish Embassy aims to promote cultural exchange, foster new friendships and deepen mutual understanding between communities.
