RAWALPINDI (MNN); Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, was once again barred from meeting him on Tuesday, prompting party leaders and supporters to stage a sit-in near Adiala Jail.
The PTI had earlier claimed that police had mishandled and “violently detained” Imran’s sisters last week when they attempted to meet him after being denied their regular weekly visit. A PTI livestream on Tuesday showed a large crowd chanting slogans as riot police monitored the area.
Aleema, along with her sisters Noreen Niazi and Dr Uzma Khan, was stopped by police at Factory Naka. The move triggered loud protests by PTI supporters, who began a sit-in on the spot. MWM Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas also joined the protest.
Speaking to reporters at the sit-in, Aleema vowed to stay until she was allowed to see her brother, questioning the heavy deployment of police. She said the authorities’ behaviour reflected a “law of the jungle” and warned that ignoring the constitution and law would push the country further towards disorder.
She also condemned last week’s incident, accusing female police personnel of mistreatment and claiming they were acting to please Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. “If they want to arrest us, we are not afraid,” she added.
Meanwhile, PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh posted a video on X showing the party’s Karachi General Secretary Arslan Khalid at the protest. He criticised the police for using similar tactics as before to disperse the crowd, reiterating the party’s demand for Imran Khan’s release.
Earlier, Aleema told a reporter that she had a legal and constitutional right to visit her brother in jail. “We come here legally. If we are attacked, it is unconstitutional. As Imran Khan said, the rule of law is being buried,” she stated.
