Modi’s Alliance Leads in Bihar Exit Polls, Projected to Secure Majority

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s alliance appears poised for a strong showing in Bihar, one of India’s poorest yet politically significant states, according to exit polls released after local elections concluded on Tuesday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its key regional ally, Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)], are projected to win between 130 and 167 seats, surpassing the majority threshold of 122 seats.

The main opposition, led by the Indian National Congress in coalition with regional parties, is forecasted to secure between 70 and 108 seats.

While exit polls are not final, a victory would strengthen Modi’s political standing after a challenging year marked by economic slowdowns and foreign policy pressures.

Bihar, with a population of 127 million—comparable to Mexico—plays a critical role in national politics, sending 40 lawmakers to India’s 543-member lower house. The BJP-JD(U) alliance, headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has relied on social welfare programs and infrastructure development to appeal to voters.

The second phase of polling recorded a high voter turnout of 67.14 percent, a historic level for the state, according to the Election Commission of India. Analysts suggest that a weak opposition showing could reshape political alliances ahead of the five state elections scheduled for 2026. Official results are expected on Friday.
