ISLAMABAD; Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Saifullah Abro resigned from the Senate on Monday after voting in favor of the controversial 27th Constitutional Amendment.

Abro clarified that his vote was cast solely for Field Marshal Asim Munir and the Pakistan Army, not for any political or personal agenda.

Addressing the Upper House, he said, “If anyone is mistaken, let me make it clear that I came here to vote for Asim Munir, not for anyone else.”

The Senate passed the amendment bill, which seeks significant changes to the military and judicial structures, despite protests and a walkout by opposition members.

Besides members of the treasury, Abro, representatives from the Awami National Party (ANP), and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) Ahmed Khan voted in favor of the bill.

Abro lauded the Pakistan Army for its decisive victory over India in May this year and noted that India was initially reluctant to accept the defeat.

He added that the situation was ultimately acknowledged by US President Donald Trump, who accorded unprecedented respect to Field Marshal Asim Munir, surpassing the honor given to any previous Pakistani prime minister.

Concluding his speech, Abro announced his resignation from the Senate, citing possible disqualification for contravening party policy on the amendment.

He also criticized his party colleagues for failing to support him during challenging personal times. Abro revealed that during the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, ten members of his family, including his wife, were arrested, and he received no support from the party.
