BAJAUR: Authorities have enforced a week-long curfew in Bajaur’s Mamond tehsil to facilitate an intensified counter-terrorism operation following a recent surge in militant activity in the region.

According to the district administration, the curfew came into effect at 5:00 pm on August 16 and will remain in place until 5:00 pm on August 21. The decision was approved by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Home Department under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The order strictly prohibits public gatherings, outdoor activities, and all forms of movement on roads during the specified period.

Residents of 24 localities, including Malangi, Suparai, Dwaogai, Meena Sulemankhel, Khwar Chai, Chamyar Jor, Zagai, Gat, Agra, Ghandai, Zari, Nakhtar, Mula Killay, Bakaro, Gowati, Chamyalon, Larkalan, Barkalan, Ghanam Shah, Chotra, Damma Dola, Sultan Baig, Inam Khworo, and Naga, have been directed to remain indoors. Authorities have cautioned that any violation of the restrictions will be dealt with strictly and violators will be held responsible for untoward incidents.

Officials stated that the move was necessary to secure civilian lives and ensure that security forces could conduct precise operations without obstruction. The action comes amid intelligence reports suggesting the presence of militants in parts of Mamond, an area along the porous Pak-Afghan border that has historically been a hotspot of militant infiltration and activity.

Security analysts note that Bajaur has witnessed a revival of militant networks in recent months, with targeted attacks on police, tribal elders, and security installations reported. Operations in such regions often require temporary curfews to minimize collateral damage and to restrict militant movement.

Local sources reported that large contingents of security forces have been deployed, and door-to-door searches are being carried out in certain villages. Authorities have assured that relief arrangements, including food and medical supplies, will be facilitated through local administration for affected families during the curfew period.

The latest restrictions highlight the ongoing challenges in the tribal belt, where security forces continue to counter militant threats despite repeated clearance operations. Officials stressed that the curfew is a short-term measure aimed at restoring peace and stability in Bajaur’s Mamond tehsil.
